Over the past few months transitioning from part time to full time Counselling, I have encountered some puzzled faces asking me why I would want to listen to people suffering all day long.
People genuinely wondering why I wanted to be a Counsellor. It never phased me because I have always known that this is what I am here to do.
It wasn't an overnight decision, it was years of life experience, years of training and years of navigating my own journey. Working out my own stuff and being commited to my ongoing path. The biggest misconception about Counsellors is that we sit, listen and nod our heads! Or better still, that we give advice.
A week in my job is varied from the new clients who are in a lot of pain, sometimes physically as well as emotionally/mentally to clients who are really starting to feel good and then the clients who are ready to leave therapy.
Not one client, session or week is ever the same but I get to witness people come out of their darkness and into their light. I get to witness clients take responsibility, drop their stories, feel their pain, release their trauma, find their power, forgive themselves and others, create healthy habits and boundaries and transform their relationships and lives. Most importantly, I witness clients starting to like themselves and feel worthy of all that life has to offer.
None of which is done by listening, nodding or giving advice. It is done by holding a therapeutic space where you are not judged or ridiculed for your past. You are held in a space where you can be YOU without the masks, the stories or the Ego. You can start to become the best version of yourself because you realise that's all you were ever supposed to be. I meet you exactly where you are and together we walk the path of healing. You decide what is best for you because I trust that you are the expert and your Soul knows exactly what you need when you have the right conditions to hear it. We don't sit and analyse head stuff all session long, we work in the here and now to see how the past is effecting you today and what trauma is being held in the body so that you can acknowledge, honour and release it.
Every Client is different, some are ready for this work and absolutely thrive from day number one, others take longer to trust me and the process but the clients who commit and show up every week start to shine from the inside out and for me to see that, for me to witness that kind of healing, it is GOLD!
